Biography of Professor Min
Chen
Professor Min Chen received his BSc degree in Computer Science from Fudan University, Shanghai in1982, and his PhD degree from University of Wales Swansea in 1991. He took up a lectureship in
Swansea in 1990, became a senior lecturer in 1998, and was awarded a personal chair in 2001.
In 1992, he established the Computer Graphics and Visualisation Group at Swansea with the help of the then head of department, Professor Peter Townsend. He has been leading the group since,
which currently consists of 5 academic staff and about 25 research assistants and research students. The group is one of the main driving forces in the field of Volume Graphics on the international
stage, and has developed a wealth of expertise in areas of computer graphics, visualisation, data and interaction management, and multimedia communications.
In particular, Professor Chen has been focusing his research activities on volume graphics. He has made a series of research contributions in this field, including Constructive Volume Geometry and
volume graphics API, volume morphing, deformation and animation, rendering complex volume graphics scenes, parallel volume rendering, non-photorealistic volume rendering, volume, video
visualization, comparative visualization and spectral volume rendering.
In addition to volume graphics, Professor Chen has also worked on projects in other areas of visual and interactive computing, such as a new Java-based script language for collaborative
environments, autonomic visualization infrastructure, interaction protocols for complex camera controls, and 3D virtual environments. As the co-director of the WDA Centre of Excellence for
Communications and Software Technologies, he has led, or co-directed, a number of industrially-related projects, covering a broad range of technologies (e.g., video-centred software technology,
knowledge-based customer-relationship management, autonomic computing, and large-scale imagery data management).
Professor Chen has published over 90 research papers since 1986. He was awarded a Tektronix Travelling Scholarship in 1988 for part of his PhD work in computer graphics. He was invited to
contribute a comprehensive survey article on volume graphics by Encyclopaedia of Computer Science and Technology. He has received over £2m research funding from EPSRC, DTI, WDA and
Industry. He served in the program committees of many international conferences and workshops, and reviewed numerous research papers and many grant proposals. He organised several national
and international conferences at Swansea, including the First International Workshop on Volume Graphics in 1999, which led to a biennial workshop series, and the International Workshop on HPCGV
in 1995, which in turn led to the biennial Eurographics workshop on Parallel Graphics and Visualization. He is a fellow of British Computer Society, a member of Eurographics and ACM SIGGRAPH.
Since 1992, under his supervision, 11 PhD and 2 MPhil students have successfully completed their programmes. Since 1994, 10 of his final-year project students have won a total of 14 prizes (over
£15K in total) in the competitions for the WDA Technology Prizes and the UK Students of the Year Awards.
On 29 October 2001, he was most honoured to be invited by the Prime Minister and Mrs Blair to No. 10 Downing Street for a party celebrating the excellence in the UK higher education.
