"Volume Graphics: A Field in Flatland"

Taliesin Theatre
Swansea University

Monday 14 th November 2005
5.30pm - 6.30pm

Professor Min ChenInaugural Lecture delivered by Professor Min Chen

In this lecture Professor Min Chen will describe the emergence and development of volume graphics as a subfield of computer graphics.

Most computer graphics artworks we have seen today are created using surface graphics techniques, which have difficulties in handling models with complex internal structures (such as human bodies) and models without well-defined geometry (such as fire). Volume graphics is concerned with graphics scenes defined in volume data types, where a model is specified by a mass of points instead of a set of surfaces. The underlying mathematical definition of such a model is a field-based representation. While volume graphics enables graphical models to be specified in a true three-dimensional manner and thus has much more descriptive power than surface graphics, it also poses a great challenge in its realisation, especially on the two-dimensional computer display.

Drawing on his extensive research experience which helped shape the field of volume graphics, Professor Chen will provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in the field, and discuss some major technical challenges including those proposed in VG99 held in Swansea, and VG05 held in New York.
