E-commerce Essentials

Practical guides which tell you how to actually "do" e-commerce.

Doing business online
Free guide from the UK Online for Business website. Gives you practical advice on how to get started in e-commerce. It is designed to give enough basic information for any small to medium sized enterprise to assess and begin to exploit the opportunities open to them through e-commerce. Download from the website or click here for other ways to order all UK Online for Business publications.

How do I?
Useful series of articles from Opportunity Wales, based on their practical experience over the last couple of years. One of the most common questions the Centre of Excellence staff get asked when visiting SMEs, is, "how do I ……..". The blank can be filled by almost anything relating to basic use of eCommerce. How do I implement my own eCatalogue? How do I get better use from eMail? How do I select a Web page developer?

Internet Works
Some useful articles from Internet Works.

Workz.com
A practical series of articles from Workz.com with a lot of useful information.

Clickz
Useful articles on the Clickz website. They also suggest a place to find a good selection of shopping cart software - The CGI Resource Index.

E-commerce Sources
An "e-commerce treasure trove" from Wilson Internet Services. Articles, case studies, e-commerce applications, successes and failures to learn from. Includes e-commerce news headlines, a monthly newsletter & an e-commerce forum. A great deal of free information, although access to some of these sections requires a subscription. You will have to pay to view the shopping cart section which links to all the reviews of shopping cart programs they can find on the Web.

Impact of e-commerce on different business sectors
The DTI plans to do around 60 studies looking at key business sectors and examine opportunities, threats and barriers in an attempt to encourage the uptake of e-commerce. The first reports are already on this website.

Go for IT
UK online for business has been working with a range of companies to produce a new video, CD-ROM guide and information pack. These companies, as diverse as a hotel in Devon and a Farmers Market in Scotland are all featured on the video and CD Rom showing just how they have developed their businesses through IT,and giving examples of how you or your customers could too. For your FREE copy, call 0845 715 2000 or order via website.

E-Business Taskforce Report 2001
An interesting report from the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) recommends practical measures which the government should take to help more small businesses trade online - can only be downloaded in pdf format.

E-business:deliver products and services efficiently
An excellent article from Web Marketing Today. If you are thinking of selling products or services from a website, you need to consider how you are going to store and distribute those goods.

Electronic Commerce Directive
The new E-Commerce Directive came into effect on 21 August 2002 and should mean that online shoppers will benefit from increased internet security. The Directive sets out strict regulations for businesses in the UK who wish to sell or advertise goods through internet or mobile phones.
