A User's Guide to late payment legislation 
This is an updated guide you can download as as pdf file. Includes new measures, which will come into force on 7 August 2002. These will allow firms who are owed money to claim up to 100 pounds in debt recovery costs for each overdue bill, in addition to claiming interest on the amount owed. Copies can also be obtained by telephoning (0870) 150 2500. The website of the Better Payment Practice Group has a useful range of resources including a calculator to work out the amount of interest you are entitled to charge on outstanding debts.
LATE PAYMENT ALERT...! Smaller businesses could face new cash-flow problems if large suppliers start charging interest on over-due invoices when the final stage in the Late Payment Act becomes legislation.
SMALLER BUSINESSES are failing to cash-in on the late payment laws, according to the Credit Management Research Centre (CMRC), because over the past year there was a 50 per cent drop in the number of SMEs which did so. The CMRC also points out that about 40 per cent failed to do because most are afraid of losing trade and 35 per cent regard the legislation as a waste of time - and money.
Online Debt Collection Service 
The Lord Chancellor's Department has launched 'Money Claim Online (MCOL)', which allows individuals and businesses to pursue debts of up to £100,000 via the Internet. If the claim is undefended, as almost 98% were in 2001, the claimant will also be able to recover the money online.

This is a dedicated advice service for small businesses. The national helpline is 0800 197 6026 and you will also find information on the website. For individuals there is the National Debtline.
