North Wales technology firm targets US golf sector

A technology company based in north Wales has announced that it is planning to expand into the US golf market with a new mapping product.

The CaddyAid software from St Asaph-based DMC maps golf courses and has been used by some of the top European golfers at the recent Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, Lancashire, including Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood, the Western Mail reports.

DMC is planning to showcase CaddyAid ahead of the 2008 Ryder Cup in Valhalla, Kentucky, having obtained key support from the Welsh Assembly government.

Using similar global positioning satellite (GPS) technology to the satellite navigation systems found in cars, CaddyAid can provide golfers with accurate information about how far away a hole is and a photograph of it on screen.

Commenting on the device, leading caddie Billy Foster stated: "With CaddyAid, I can tell my player where we are to any point using the large colour screen and specific distances to key points such as bunkers, ditches, greens and trees. It really is that accurate."

Other features of the north Wales technology include automated readouts and information about the width of any fairway, distance to the pin, distance to a favourite lay up and lines to key points.
