SME technology adoption 'affected' by business conditions'
Concerns about business conditions in an uncertain economy outweigh interest in potentially innovative new technologies among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), according to IDC.
The analyst published a new report this week highlighting the fact that economic growth is the most important priority for SMEs in western Europe and North America.
Businesses in Wales are advised that innovative new technologies can help them to improve efficiency, productivity and performance during tough economic conditions.
John Roberts, research manager at IDC, explained that the growth of SME investment in new technology continues to outpace that of larger firms, but that economic concerns are now on every
company's agenda.
"Despite the global slowdown, [SMEs] across all regions need to look ahead to when the global economy rebounds. Most still have a near-term focus, with only modest interest in technology areas that
have been getting a lot of attention elsewhere."
Looking at several emerging technologies, IDC suggested that SMEs should place more focus on software-as-a-service (SaaS), virtualisation and the use of the internet as a business resource.
Meanwhile, a report by the Yankee Group has suggested that 72 per cent of larger companies around the world have deployed virtualisation or are considering doing so in order to improve the efficiency
of their IT systems and cut costs.
