Companies warned on future of internet
Experts speaking at a recent European conference have warned that urgent action needs to be taken if the internet is to be stopped from grinding to a halt.
Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for telecommunications, told delegates at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD) Future of the Internet Economy event, that more must be done to accelerate the adoption of IPv6.
"We indeed risk falling short of internet addresses within 3 years," she said, noting that the European Commission last month set a target that 25 percent of European internet users should be
able to connect by IPv6 internet by 2010.
Echoing these sentiments, Geoff Huston, chief scientist of the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre, which manages internet addresses in the
region, added that failure to upgrade to IPv6 would undermine the world economy.
"The simple observation is that we really should be well into a transition across the entire industry by now, and we are nowhere near that point," he said.
Recently, telecoms regulator Ofcom suggested that UK networks would require as much as £830 million of investment over the next five
years in order to cope with the strain of on-demand video services.
