Lack of ICT skills 'can hold job candidates back'

Job candidates who are lacking adequate ICT and computing skills are likely to face significant problems, it has been claimed.

In a joint interview, Jon Gamble - director for adults and lifelong learning at the Learning and Skills Council - and Abigail Stevens, communications manager of UK Online Centres, said that ICT skills are vital in today's job market.

"A lack of basic computing skills and access to ICT can be a barrier to employment for a number of reasons," they said, explaining that over 80 per cent of jobs require these competencies.

Additionally, many employment positions are currently only advertised online, they added.

Reasons that adults may not be up to speed with ICT skills include a lack of confidence, interest or education, Mr Gamble and Ms Stevens suggested.

Last month, the Times reported that according to the results of an ICM poll, one-fifth of Britons are not able to use email.
