Rate relief could be extended for Welsh small firms

Welsh minister Brian Gibbons has announced that the Welsh Assembly Government would be consulting on proposals to extend rate relief to small businesses in Wales.

Over 37,000 small businesses already receive rate relief from the Welsh Assembly but the government hopes to increase this figure by more than 3,000.

At present, the upper rateable limit is £5,000 though this figure is set to rise to £6,000, effectively reducing rate bills by between £582 and £700 for those affected.

The majority of beneficiaries to this announcement will be small business holders.

Mr Gibbons said: "These proposals to extend the business rate relief scheme will provide real assistance to smaller businesses and credit unions across Wales."

The scheme was implemented in 2002 and the new extension is to be debated at the Local Government and Public Services Meeting that is to be held November 23rd later this year.
