Small businesses hit by town centre parking restrictionsSmall businesses in Wales that have been affected by restrictive parking conditions in town centres may be pleased to know that the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has called on local authorities to do something about the problem.Ahead of the local elections in England and Wales next month, the organisation has said that the practice of local authorities using excessive parking charges to raise revenue is strangling small high street businesses. It reported that local authorities made £1.6 billion from parking fines in 2005, a big increase from £628 million in 1997. Roger Culceth, FSB local government chairman, said: "Although parking restrictions can raise a lot of cash in the short term, they can be extremely damaging to local economies and ultimately counter-productive, as shops in town centres begin to close." Businesses which find that their customers are no longer able to access their store easily could consider moving online and working from home, which the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies recently suggested is a growing trend.
