Medium-sized businesses increasing IT budgets

More medium sized enterprises are increasing their IT budgets in 2008 than large enterprises, a new report has revealed.

According to research from IDC, concerns in areas such as security are leading mid-sized to also invest greater amounts of money, proportionately, than their larger peers.

Technology website IT Week reports that Mette Ahorlu, consulting director of European software and services at IDC, said: "They don't see size as a major determinant of their IT needs. The specific character of each vertical industry plays a much stronger role than organisational size."

Surveying 200 enterprises, IDC also learned that medium firms are more likely to buy their IT solutions in the form of standardised services, while larger firms prefer to invest in more customisable services.

Analyst Gartner recently reported that global IT budget growth remains flat despite the current economic concerns. Surveying 1,000 organisations, it found that 62 per cent have seen no change in their 2008 IT budget, while 15 per cent reported increases.
