Business market for web 2.0 technology set to grow

Web 2.0 technologies have not just reshaped the way that developers interact with their end-users, but have also changed the way in which the development process is done, according to new research.

Analyst Evans Data explained that social networking, profiles, blogs, interactive virtual realities and mashups are influencing business-to-business software developers to redesign their application interfaces and integrate gadgets and widgets.

A survey of developers revealed that 40 per cent of interfaces for web 2.0 applications are web-rich "mixed" clients, including Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) for fast downloads of pages including live data feeds, gadgets and other dynamic components.

It also indicated that the vast majority of developers are using widgets from third party enterprises to deploy fast, resource-light business applications and services.

John Andrews, president of Evans Data, said: "Businesses are starting to realise the strengths of web 2.0 in terms of fast deployment of rich internet applications, use of open source technologies, as well as some of the communications benefits it can provide to employees and customers."

"The demand for web 2.0 talent is only getting hotter. It's an indication that the business market will continue to grow quite rapidly," he added.

According to Gartner, half of all chief information officers (CIOs) plan to invest in web 2.0 business and consumer technologies for the first time in 2008.
