Information security managers 'unaware of guidelines'Most UK professionals in charge of information security at their organisations are unaware of the contents of information security standards such as BS 7799 and ISO 27000, it has been revealed.A government survey, conducted in partnership with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), revealed that 79 percent of information security managers do not know what is contained within the guidelines. Computer Weekly reports that Chris Potter, a partner at PwC, said: "The standards contain good guidance on what organisations can do to protect themselves, so [not knowing what is in them] is a missed opportunity." He told the website that UK businesses may not be taking the most efficient approach to their security management, but did add that awareness and adoption of security standards was beginning to improve in the UK. This week, members of industry group Open Geospatial Consortium approved KML, the technology used by Google in its Google Earth application, as an open standard for the description of geographic data. The internet search giant is hoping that standardizing KML will help encourage broader used of the map description language by other enterprises and organisations. The format is already shared openly and has been used in other software products.
