IT security a concern for businesses

In news that may be of interest to small business owners in Wales, Infosecurity Europe has found that three-quarters of chief security officers fear that the applications used by their organisation contain security holes that could be exploited by hackers and criminals.

The information security specialist interviewed 757 companies across Europe, learning that CSOs are very concerned about the security of application code, particularly mission critical Web applications that are outsourced to third parties.

The majority of respondents also said that they would welcome initiatives to raise security awareness among the developer community and change attitudes to make software security a priority.

Howard Schmidt, director of Fortify Software, said that quality is one of the top priorities when organisations develop applications, but that security vulnerabilities are often overlooked.

"Priority is often given to delivering application features and business benefits without the understanding of fundamental coding errors that lead to security issues," he said.

He advised business leaders to put business software assurance processes in place and encourage development practices designed to ensure application security, for the protection of the data of consumers, clients and shareholders.
