Business-IT perception gap remains
Despite the growing inter-dependence between business and IT, there is a major gap between what IT understands about business requirements and what businesses expect from their IT services, it has
been claimed.
According to a new book from the British Computer Society (BCS), businesses do not buy IT services for what they can do, but for what they believe
they will be able to do for the business, even if that is not the case.
David Miller, author of 'Business-Focused IT and Service Excellence', which will be released in May 2008, explained that this persistent gap in perceptions remains the "largest single
obstacle" to achieving the highest level of service excellence.
"If it is ever to be bridged, it is crucial that IT professionals become more aware of the needs and challenges being faced by the businesses they seek to serve," he said.
Mr Miller, a leading consultant on service excellence, explained that IT professionals must understand business needs and think about how to design products and services to meet or exceed business
expectations if they are to achieve service excellence.
BCS recently established a new digital media qualification, Digital Cre8or, which has been approved by the
Qualifications and Curriculum Authority to equate with a GCSE. So far, it is being taught in approximately 20 schools in the UK.
