Massive rise in malware forecast for 2008
Businesses and consumers are likely to see a ten-fold increase in the amount of malware clogging up the internet this year, according to a new report from security vendor Kaspersky.
The company predicted that there will be more than 20 million new malicious programs in circulation by the end of 2008, noting that it expects one million new malware signatures to be added to the
Kaspersky database, up from 250,000 last year.
David Emms, senior technology consultant at the company, said: "In addition to the quantity, the quality of malicious programs is also improving.
"New and more complex samples, such as the notorious Zhelatin (storm worm), are emerging that demonstrate a wide range of hostile behaviour and distribution methods," he added.
He explained that hackers are now working in large groups, enabling them to make exponentially more new threats than a single programmer would be able to. Most of these threats will be used for
financial gain, the proceeds being pumped back into the creation of further threats.
In response to the growing threat, IBM recently called for a new approach to enterprise security on the internet.
