Millions for training and apprenticeships in Wales

The government has increased its support for the new Creative Apprenticeships scheme by approving up to £60 million per year for the programme, boosting training and apprenticeship opportunities in Wales.

Creative & Cultural Skills (CCSkills) and the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) have welcomed news of the funding, which will provide key skills training in the creative and cultural industries in England and Wales.

The additional funding will provide as many as 1,000 Creative Apprenticeship places in the sector per year, many of which will be in Wales and will help to address a significant skills gap within the creative industries.

Ministers have set a target of 5,000 apprenticeships across the creative industries over the next few years, with industry preparing to invest millions more in new talent.

A recent study by CCSkills found that 90 per cent of firms in the creative sector do not currently have training budgets and many of those that do are investing less than £1,000 per year in staff development.

The Welsh deputy first minister Ieuan Wyn Jones announced last month that the assembly government is planning to create a new £150 million fund to invest in small and medium-sized enterprises in the country.
