IT leaders call for chartered qualifications

Chief information officers (CIOs) and IT managers have criticised the state of qualifications within the IT industry, calling for the implementation of a charter system, according to IT Week.

It explained that the current quagmire of different IT qualifications is making it difficult for business executives to distinguish between different candidates for management positions in IT.

David Byrne, architecture director at The Carphone Warehouse, told the website: "People have a whole scattering of qualifications when they apply to jobs and it makes it difficult to know what is what."

The introduction of a recognised chartered qualification would allow the IT industry to define the skills that practitioners acquire, allowing them to gain credibility within the enterprise, it explained.

Although the British Computing Society offers a Chartered IT Professional qualification, it has received much criticism due to the fact that many believe it to be at odds with the current values of the IT marketplace.

Last year, Micro Focus, provider of enterprise application management solutions, set up its Academic ConnecTIONs (ACTION) program to offer COBOL-programming and core IT skills required by major corporations to students. The course is currently available at more than 50 academic institutions.
