Malware threat continues to grow, report says

Businesses need to exercise greater caution if they are to adequately protect themselves from the growing threat of malware as criminals become more sophisticated, according to a new report.

Analyst Forrester Research warned that malware, which was once only prevalent on dubious websites, now has the run of the whole internet and can frequently be encountered on trusted domains.

Dr Chenxi Wang, of Forrester Research, said: "There are countless examples where trusted sites have been compromised to host malware, or code that will redirect the user to a malware site."

"It's important for operators of trusted sites to be extremely vigilant about the security of their sites so that there is no possibility they could be compromised," he added.

Forrester's new report, Threat Report: 2007 and Beyond, is due to be published next week at the research company's security forum in Amsterdam, where it will examine the various criminal networks that create and distribute malware.
