Enterprises should secure web 2.0 ecosystem for employees

Rather than blocking employees' access to web 2.0 technologies and services, enterprises should better secure these applications so that they can take advantage of the creativity and innovation that web 2.0 can encourage.

That is according to research company Gartner, which said that business demands are increasingly calling for organisations to secure the web 2.0 global ecosystem.

A survey of 1,500 chief information officers at organisations around the world revealed that over half are planning to invest in web 2.0 technologies for the first time in 2008.

"Rather than just stopping the use of web 2.0 technologies, IT groups should be providing secure means of developing and deploying such applications," said Joseph Feiman, vice president and fellow of Gartner.

"The business application movement toward web 2.0 and other related-trends, such as increased use of open-source software and wider deployment of service-orientated architectures, are combining to change how applications are developed with significant implications for security."

According to Gartner, mashups, Ajax and other web 2.0 technologies are already in too great use at many organisations for blocking access to the web 2.0 ecosystem to be a viable option. Instead, it advised enterprises to take strategic steps to improve the ways that the business uses web 2.0 to increase the bottom line.
