Wales shown to be most entrepreneurial region

Wales and the south-west are the regions with the highest concentration entrepreneurs in Britain, according to new findings from Abbey Business Banking.

The study reveals that 19 per cent of people in Wales run their own business, compared to the 12 per cent national average.

Welsh people and those in the south-west were also shown to be particularly interested in the business consultancy and investment sectors.

A total of one in seven people said they had hopes of starting a firm in one of these industries, which is higher than the national average of eight per cent.

"Many people dream of being their own boss, yet more than one in five doubt themselves before they even begin," commented Ian Wilson, managing director of Abbey Business Banking.

He cited lack of funding and inexperience as some of the "hurdles" that keep people from realising their dream, but advised them to seek advice at their bank or from other owners of small firms.

Recent findings of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform's small business survey revealed that 60 per cent of small organisations in Wales plan to grow in the next few years.
