Survey: Spyware posing real threat to SME productivity

Small companies operating workstations that are infected with spyware could suffer from massively reduced productivity, according to a new survey from the Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA).

It found that a quarter of all employees working at companies with less than 200 computers have had problems in the last six months with spyware infections, the majority of whom claimed that their productivity had suffered as a result.

On average, respondents claimed that productivity dropped by 21 per cent during a period of spyware infection, although they reported a larger drop of 32 per cent when systems were at their most infected.

The results were made worse by the fact that respondents admitted to working with a spyware-riddled system for an average 18 hours, more than two working days, before seeking a solution, despite the fact that doing so had such a noticeable impact on their overall performance.

A separate survey of IT professional contractors by CompTIA revealed that the average spyware infection takes 2.8 hours per infected computer to fix, adding to the overall expense.
