Company size linked to security spending

The size of a company has a direct bearing on security spending strategy, according to research from Forrester, but it is perhaps not the link that many would expect.

According to surveys of 2,000 security decision makers in various sized enterprises across Europe and North America, smaller companies spend proportionately more on security than their larger peers.

While enterprises devoted seven per cent of their IT budget to security technology, on average, small and medium businesses (SMBs) were found to spend around nine per cent.

The research also revealed that the three top challenges facing IT security teams at all companies are lack of budget, lack of in-house skills and excessive workload.

While enterprises were shown to be spending less on security technology than SMEs, Forrester said that they were also spending more than smaller firms on security staffing.

Additionally, it was found that two thirds of enterprise IT security applications included some degree of reporting to departments outside of IT.
