Worldwide location based services to grow rapidly in 2008

Global business and consumer subscribers to location-based communications services on mobile devices will increase by 168 per cent in 2008, with revenue growing by 169 per cent, it has been forecast.

According to technology research company Gartner, the number of subscribers will rise from 16 million in 2007 to 43.2 million in 2008, reaching nearly 300 million by 2011.

"Location-based service technologies have been around for several years but they have not experienced the rate of success that was anticipated at the beginning," said Annette Zimmermann, research analyst at Gartner.

"Growth now will be stimulated by the arrival of mobile phones with built-in, precise location sensing and the arrival of new service providers, like Google and Nokia with its service offerings, keen to exploit geographic and positioning technologies."

As GPS technology improves and becomes standard in mobile devices, Gartner predicted that more location-based services would become available, such as navigation for business travellers and pedestrians, child location and local directories and advertising.

It also noted that market potential would cause handset vendors, carriers and service providers to compete with one another, while new market players would also appear, with increased competition serving to reduce subscription prices and increase uptake.
