Online backup services growth
As the amount of digital data produced by enterprises and consumers continues its dramatic rise, IDC has predicted that the worldwide market for
online backup services will see revenue grow to $715 million (£362.5 million) by 2011.
The research company expects that this emerging market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 33.3 per cent between 2006 and 2011, with more than 50 per cent of initial market spending
coming from North America before other regions such as Europe pick up.
Doug Chandler, IDC research director for storage services, explained: "Consumers and small businesses are especially interested in alternative methods of protecting their data, as traditional backup
methods fall short regarding efficiency, reliability and ease-of-use.
"Online backup has become an attractive approach for many customers, with the advent of cheaper broadband access, users' greater comfort level with web-based services, and the growing
business need for a second site for remote data protection purposes."
IDC estimated that adoption of online backup services among larger businesses and enterprises would pick up after the first few years, noting that market growth would begin slowing in 2010 due to
practice standardisation and pricing competition.
