Businesses 'Waking Up to SMS'

Companies are beginning to discover the potential that SMS messaging can provide to their business, with mobile phone users in the UK sending an average of 1.2 billion text messages every week, according to the latest quarterly report by the Mobile Data Association (MDA).

During September, 4.8 billion messages were sent, at a rate of 4,000 a second, equating to the total number of messages sent during the entirety of 1999.

Mike Short, chairman of the MDA, commented on the findings: "The continued growth of text volumes remains a source of fascination for us all at the MDA. Today, text messaging remains important, but as part of a much larger and more complex mobile communications industry.

"From mobile TV, mobile advertising and marketing to internet browsing and music and content creation, the mobile device continues to extend its reach into increasing parts of all our lives."

He went on to explain how bundled and packaged monthly deals from mobile operators meant that customers and an increasing number of businesses were getting deals to suit their mobile usage needs.

According to the research, there has been a significant increase in the amount of companies that are using SMS to communicate with customers and employees. Financial institutions, in particular, are now increasingly keeping customers updates on their product applications via text messages.
