Firms need long-term storage solutions

Businesses need to implement an effective strategy for managing long-term data storage or risk the loss of crucial information, according to a new survey.

The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) polled almost 300 information professionals and found widespread discontent over how well their firm is prepared to manage data storage over the next 50 years.

Despite 80 per cent saying their firm has data that must be kept for at least 50 years, 70 perc ent said they were "highly dissatisfied" with preparations for storing this information and subsequently being able to access it in 50 years' time.

Furthermore, just 30 per cent said they were moving regularly information across onto new formats and new storage media despite concerns about future compatibility with old technologies.

"Driven by compliance, security and legal risk, organisations of all types are experiencing extraordinary challenges related to the long-term retention of digital information in today's data centre," said Vincent Franceschini, chairman of SNIA.

"This ground breaking study identifies requirements from the practitioner's point of view and confirms that this pending crisis must be addressed by developing standards and best practices consistent with the operating practice we call information lifecycle management," he added.
