Welsh woman wins case over email spying
A college worker from Wales has successfully sued her company for spying on her emails, prompting businesses both small and large to be wary of a repeat occurring.
Lynette Copland, employee at Carmarthenshire College, received a sum of over £6,000 at the European Court of Human Rights and small businesses across Wales and the rest of the UK will
obviously wish to avoid such a scenario.
It was ruled that the privacy of Ms Copeland had been breached after her employer began tracking her internet usage including monitoring her emails back in 1998 to 1999.
Commenting on the case, Alison Love, employment solicitor at Hugh James in Cardiff explained: "Employers must make sure they
have the appropriate policies with regard to email and internet use in place, that these are communicated to staff and that they are abided by."
According to the European court, the surveillance of Ms Copland, without her consent, "amounted to an interference with her right to a private life".
