UK firms fall prey to spyware

About three-quarters of British organisations fell victim to spyware last year.

However, according to research conducted by Peapod, some 19 percent of firms were unable to identify the source of the attack.

Managing Director Chris Durnan said: "As the survey shows, technology is not the only answer when viewed in isolation, it is also down to the user to play a key role in ensuring that spyware doesn't get a foothold in the infrastructure."

The majority of attacks were reported to have come through instant messaging (IM) even though 57 percent of businesses were reported to have banned the facility.

Mr Durnan claimed that misuse of IM in the workplace could allow employees to release confidential information undetected.

Some 203 organisations were surveyed, including a number of health care, financial services and manufacturing firms, as well as central and local government bodies.

According to Internet service provider Claranet, companies need to become more pro-active protecting themselves from security threats, reports IT Pro.
