Email worms drive virus growth

A pair of email attacks launched over the past two months have seen the number of viruses on the internet in January grow to 20 times its normal rate, a new report suggests.

According to Postini, the Happy New Year and Storm worms have seen millions of computers become the tool of hackers and phishers since December, sending spam emails and viruses across the globe.

Executive vice president of marketing, Daniel Druker, said: "The explosion of bot-nets, millions of infected computers controlled by malicious actors around the world, has changed the balance of power in the world communications security."

He added that as Valentines Day approaches consumers should be cautious of suspicious emails with love-related subject lines.

Mr Druker's comments come as users were warned to beware the Storm virus which contains a subject line relating to recent news stories.

If consumers click on attachments sent from either worm, then their computer could be infected with a virus which attempts to send personal information to the hackers who created it before replicating itself.

Postini claims to be a world leader in integrated message management, providing security services to over 35,000 businesses across the globe.
