Small business boost from Skype

Skype has announced the launch of desktop internet phones which allow small business users to call other Skype users as well as mobile phones and landlines using broadband internet connections without the need to be connected to a PC or laptop.

Skype-to-Skype calls remain free, while the SkypeOut package offers cheap calls to landlines or mobiles.

The two phones developed for use with the technology are IPEVO's Solo.1 and TOPCOM's Webt@lker 5000.

Both models feature programmes friendly to users familiar with the look and feel of Skype on their PC or laptop, including colour display screens, contact management options and the opportunity to register for Skype through the desktop device.

The new internet desktop phones will allow small business users and private customers "more flexibility", according to Eric Lagier, Skype's director for business development in the hardware and mobile sectors.

The phones, unveiled at the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, will be available from March 2007 at the online Skype store, which also serves UK customers.

Skype serves 136 million users across the globe with VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology.
