Newport Networks seals big convergence deal
A Newport communications company has been selected to provide hardware to help a major telco merge its telephony and internet networks.
Newport Networks announced at its annual general meeting that it is near launching a partnership with a "Tier-1" operator, enabling the company to become a provider of fast voice calls over the internet, the Western Mail reported.
Chairman Sir Terry Matthews told delegates that the company was in negotiations to supply session border control (SBC) equipment for the operator's next generation network.
"We have been verbally informed that the Newport Networks 1460 Session Border Controller has been selected and we continue to expect to receive the initial order before June 30, 2006," he said.
He added, "We are also in negotiation with a number of other potential customers for our Session Border Controller and remain optimistic that orders will be received and revenues recognised from these negotiations during 2006."
The company claims that the Newport 1460 has successfully handled 195,000 simultaneous phone conversations, achieving highest performance figures in the industry according to independently verified testing of its VoIP capabilities.
