Wireless VoIP on the horizon

This year could well see wireless VoIP voice over internet protocol telephony emerge on the communications scene, according to a new report by IDC.

Trials, pilots and proof-of-concepts wireless internet telephony projects are set to dominate the market in the year ahead, the company predicted.

The mass market availability of dual-mode Wi-Fi/GSM handsets, along with IP telephony vendors’ integration of fixed-mobile convergence into their IP PBXs private branch exchanges, will also be factors, IDC said.

Susana Vidal, senior telecommunications analyst at IDC, said that enterprises were beginning to consider VoIP primarily in terms of its features rather than simply as a cost-saving technology.

"This implies that there will be increased interest in ensuring that their WLAN and VoIP systems are ready for future wireless VoIP deployments," she said.
