Broadband drives next generation takeup
Broadband and mobility are the two key forces driving the development of next generation technologies, according to a report by Infonetics Research.
Service providers are increasingly pumping investment into new technologies, with broadband internet, metro ethernet and IP VPNs (internet protocol-enabled virtual private networks) causing the biggest growth in Asia-Pacific, North America and Europe.
Michael Howard, principal analyst at Infonetics Research, indicated that IPTV (internet protocol television) and broadcast video are expected to create huge increases in traffic, and consequently in telecommunications revenues.
Many of the 29 service providers surveyed were considering offering both wired and wireless solutions for the next generation networks that will deliver these applications.
American telecoms firms appeared more confident than their EU counterparts in implementing the new technologies. About 56 per cent of European firms said that creating next generation services would be a challenge, compared with 14 per cent in North America.
