Broadband service wins approval in rural area
An area of North Wales is benefiting from a 2MB broadband service created by a Penrhyndeudraeth community regeneration company and a Bangor network provider. The network, serving the rural area circled by Blaeneau-Ffestiniog, Harlech and Cricieth, was created by Deudraeth Cyf and Gaia Technologies and a survey suggests that it has already boosted business in 77 per cent of its commercial users. Broadband is seen as a crucial means of communicating with suppliers and enhancing customer service 90 per cent of businesses served by the new network admitted that they would no longer be able to do without the facility. Nildram, BT and Demon are the service's suppliers, and in the event that one experiences difficulties then the traffic will be re-routed to another provider. Last year E-Minister Andrew Davies said: "Providing broadband access is one of the Welsh Assembly Government's priorities as we transform Wales from the highly industrialised economy of the last century to a knowledge-based economy, the currency of this new century." The move adds to Wales' aim of providing 96 per cent broadband coverage by the end of the year. Deudraeth Cyf was formed in July 2000 and states its aim as being to "offer sustainable development to the whole area" and primarily manages projects devoted to IT and related training.
