An insight into developing applications for the iPhone - Apple’s touch screen mobile platform.

Heralded by some as a major step towards ubiquitous computing, the context-aware iPhone with its desktop grade operating system has been causing a stir throughout the mobile industry. This leaves many developers and investors interested in the iPhone but asking the questions; What is all the fuss about? Is it worth developing for? and how hard is it to get started?

This presentation gives an overview for those considering the iPhone as a development platform or business opportunity, including:

  • What makes the iPhone and the mobile devices that may follow it different in terms of the business models and opportunities that they may create.
  • A potential learning path and set of resources for developers without a background in Mac development.
  • A flavour of the languages used by the iPhone and the developers tools available for it.
  • Innovative approaches to integrating web and hybrid applications within the iPhone.
Simon works as a software developer for Accountis. He is currently completing a Masters dissertation using the iPhone as a platform to explore the implications of pervasive mobile devices in the field of ubiquitous computing. Prior to developing several applications for the iPhone Simons background was in JAVA and web technologies.

The event forms part of the ITWales Software Developers programme, which is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government.
