Data Protection Principles Part 2 - Consumer rights and customer privacy

Thursday 25th October 2007
6.30pm - 8.30pm

Robert Recorde Room, Faraday Building
Swansea University, SA2 8PP

Guest Speaker: Bruce Burniston, Consultant Solicitor, John Collins & Partners LLP

Data Protection Law impinges on many aspects of business life. Direct mail and marketing campaigns are the more obvious activities where the rules need to be followed, but the law also applies in many other areas including the keeping of information about employees and applicants for jobs, giving references, recording or monitoring email, internet and telephone usage, using CCTV and so on. Customers whose data you collect have rights of access and can request data be corrected or removed. To use their date, you need their consent, but what exactly does "consent" mean?

Failure to follow the very detailed rules can be a criminal offence, where officers of a company can be liable, as well as the Company itself.

Bruce Burniston, a commercial lawyer with over 20 years experience in this area will talk about what the Data Protection Act 1998 means to you, how to comply with it and how to avoid some of the common pitfalls.
