Welsh product to take tourists to a new frontier

Top visitor destinations across the UK are buying into a new product pioneered by Port Talbot based Blackbox AV which is promising to improve the customer experience.

Called 'Frontier', the new product is an intelligent 'guide while you ride' designed primarily for fixed routes usually covered by trains, buses, boats and land trains.

Jonathan Knight, Director of Blackbox AVJonathan Knight, Director at Blackbox AV said, "Frontier brings a whole new dimension to the tour guide AV product. Its innovative use of Global Positioning system technology really heralds a new generation for Audio tours.

"Previously, AV tourguide systems have only been designed around estimations of where the tour will be and when. By using GPS technology we are able to develop the software so that regardless of external factors such as traffic or unscheduled stops the recording which people hear is relevant to exactly what they see through their windows at any given time."

Already Blackbox is working with a number of household names which are hoping to install the product ahead of the busy Easter period.

It uses pre-determined GPS co-ordinates to play messages, which allows an accuracy of within 10m on routes which can be as large as the world itself. It also has a voice override which enables guides to add their own commentary before continuing the recorded information or moving on to the next message depending on how far the tour has progressed.

The Frontier System is built on the platform of Blackbox AV's extremely versatile Envoy SB, audio is stored digitally as MP3 on a flash card - there are no moving parts which, means instant access and great long-term reliability. It is beneficial because it requires very limited user operation for day to day use but can easily be updated by the user to alter the content whenever necessary.

The unit is able to store up to two hours of audio on a 64mb flash card with up to 100 possible messages as standard but this can be increased if required.
