E-Crime Wales - The ITWales Interview

by Sali Earls

E-Crime Wales logoThe second Welsh E-Crime Summit takes place on 25 January in Llangollen, and will follow up on the themes agreed in 2005 with the objectives of tackling e-crime by means of raising awareness, education, prevention and reporting. The summit is organised by the E-Crime Wales Partnership which is made up of the Welsh Development Agency, the Welsh Assembly Government the four Welsh Police Forces, Morgan Cole, HSBC and SERCO, and has attracted additional support with major key speakers from crime prevention and business.

Photo of Detective Superintendent Chris Corcoran of North Wales Police, and Chair of the All Wales E-Crime Steering GroupSali Earls spoke to Detective Superintendent Chris Corcoran of North Wales Police, and Chair of the All Wales E-Crime Steering Group, for some insight into the Summit and the way forward for Wales.

What can delegates expect from the 2006 summit?

Delegates will receive up-to-date briefings and insights from major representatives of Microsoft, the National Hi-Tech Crime Unit, HSBC and Morgan Cole solicitors on the scale and nature of e-crime threat to businesses.

We are delighted to have secured support from an additional two key partners - HSBC and SERCO - who join the Welsh Assembly Government, WDA, NHTCU, Wales' Police Forces and Morgan Cole in the drive to support businesses to help Wales become a safer place to live and work.

If you could give SMEs in Wales one piece of advice to secure against e-Crime, what would it be?

E-crime can have a potentially serious impact and therefore it's essential that Welsh businesses are fully aware of the threats and how they can protect themselves by taking the appropriate security measures - allowing them to continue to grow and increase profits.

You've attracted some high profile speakers again this year. How important is it to have the support of organisations such as Microsoft?

It is very important to get the support from companies such as Microsoft, HSBC and SERCO as e-crime affects the very nature of their own business and to have their support proves that Wales is taking the right steps to fighting this sort of crime.

Christmas 2005 brought with it increased E-Commerce business, but the media are already warning of new internet scams, and security is quite rightly at the top of the agenda for many businesses. What can the E-Crime Summit do to educate business and the community about e - Crime, without scaremongering?

The steering group have worked with a variety of public and private sectors across Wales over the last 15 months to set out plans for fighting e-crime and we will be advising and supporting businesses through the steps they themselves can take to prevent themselves from becoming a target.

What will be the outcome of the 2006 summit, and when will follow up information be available to business?

The All Wales E-crime Manifesto and Action Plan will be shared with delegates and they will learn how the Manifesto proposes to support and protect Wales against cyber crimes.

Critically we understand that we must educate and train businesses, communities and individuals on the scale and potential threat to Wales to enable us as a Nation to put preventative measures in place to protect Wales' economy.

Collectively we will develop the support mechanisms to take the Action Plan forward. Attendees will be able to take a copy of these documents away with them at the end of the summit.

The The E-Crime Summit takes place at the Royal International Pavilion, Llangollen on 25 January 2006. For further information visit www.wda.co.uk/ecrime.
