Free knowledge management software offered to SMEs

By Staff Writer

Benchmark Software, an accounting, CRM and payroll software developer for SMEs, has launched a new knowledge management software package for small business users called Chunks.

Chunks aims to help small businesses manage knowledge and information simply, efficiently and effectively, at an affordable price. A single-user version is available free of charge, while the network version of the software costs £200.

The package enables a user to manage any type of information - from addresses, web pages, or product details to complex problem/solution sets. It can also be used for more personal knowledge such as recipes, plant care hints or birthdays. It can be used to keep any useful information for current use or future reference.

The software works by assigning every entry a title and a category and the option to further categorise using keywords. Entries in a specific category or all categories can be displayed, and easy-to-use search facilities allow the user to quickly find entries that match search words.

Chunks allows users to type text directly into a record, or to copy and paste text and/or images, including web page content.

Chunks was originally developed for in-house use by Benchmark Software's support department to build up a support database. It is now core to the Benchmark Software support department, providing a knowledgebase that allows quick and easy entry and retrieval of data.

Simon Harvey, managing director, Benchmark Software said, "Our developers knew that the package had to allow searches to be carried out and be easy-to-use so that problems could be solved quickly and efficiently."

"Although I advocate knowledge management and sharing for all organisations, smaller businesses have the ideal conditions for implementing an effective KM strategy with close and collaborative cultures. Small businesses also tend to suffer more from lost knowledge when staff leave. The practical application of knowledge management is vital for any SME to create a more productive working environment."

A new, more powerful SuperChunks package is under development, planned for release in 2004.
