MCS: Enabling mobile computing where it matters

Swansea-based MCS was founded three years ago by technical director, Richard Scott, with the support of private investment. MCS provide software development and systems integration services, specializing in the development of mobile computing enabled systems that allow important business transactions to be captured and recorded at the point of activity.

The company employs 13 full time staff, which is set to increase to 20 in the current operational year. Scott is responsible for steering strategic technical development and creating sustainable and profitable growth within the business.

With his involvement in IT systems development stretching back 18 years, Scott recognised that personal digital assistants (PDAs) were always destined to be more than just electronic organisers and has been instrumental in the development of enterprise class mobile computing systems for over 5 years.

He comments: "We consider our biggest competitor to be the clipboard; we develop systems that are intuitive to use, accommodating to the end user, and require operator training times that are measured in minutes. Our mobile computing systems are typically used by staff that would not normally work with IT systems and are used in harsh environments like manufacturing shop floors, warehouses, cold rooms and chillers."

ITW: What's unique/outstanding about the products/services you provide?

RS: Our products and services can deliver immediate and tangible business benefits by removing paper-based transactions from the point of activity. Most business have recognised that IT is an integral part of their business but even the most effective and well established IT business systems can result in an abundance of paper-based data collection. MCS systems take full advantage of low cost, industry standard mobile computing technology, radio communications and identification technologies, such as barcode reading, that easily and accurately capture and deliver information to the point of activity. Using radio communications, this data can be immediately delivered to the back office systems and presented to the appropriate business functions as management information to be acted upon.

Continually review emerging technologies and embrace those that complement or improve your products or services and most importantly enjoy what you do.

ITW: Where do you see your company going in the future?
