The BT sponsored Public Lecture was held on Tuesday 5 March in the Taliesin Theatre at Swansea University and had an attendance of nearly 300.
The two main presenters were Alan Cox from redhat and Dick Porter from Ximian, with introductions from Professor John Tucker from the Department of Computer Science, University of Wales Swansea, and John Jones from Ignite Web Services.
The subject of Alans presentation was "Doing things differently - Linux past, present and future" and it viewed the history of the Linux operating system, the free software movement behind it, and an assessment of Linux's position both now and in the future. Dick then followed on by giving a visual presentation on the enhancements they have added, with demonstrations of Outlook, Excel, and Word compatible software running under Linux along with an insight into the user interface and the desktop. Both presenters are graduates of the Department of Computer Science, University of Wales Swansea.
