Apollo Communications: Sticking to a winning formula

Apollo Communications is a Swansea-based independent communications broker servicing the business sector across the UK. The company's main area of operations is in cost reduction on fixed line and mobile calls.

After almost 20 years' industry experience, its founders Nigel Steele and Garath Williams identified a gap in the market for an independent communications broker to service the business sector.

The company's services include fixed lined and mobile services, systems provision, data services, an affinity scheme and agency partnerships.

ITW: What services does your company provide?

GW: We save companies money.

ITW: What is unique about the services you provide?

GW: We are unique in that we do not recommend or sell any one particular service. Much like an insurance broker, we tailor packages to suit individual needs. We ask prospective clients what systems/packages they have, what they do or want to do with them, how much they spend, and then find the best service for them.

ITW: What one piece of technology has benefited your company the most?

GW: Obviously in the communication industry it has to be the advances made in mobile technology, in that you can quite literally do everything from anywhere. I use the service that my mobile network provider offers to send and receive e-mails and check diary dates appointments with my mobile. I also use a Palm T for meeting notes, which can then be downloaded back at the office. Broadband has also allowed us to be more efficient and opened up a new world for many of our clients.

ITW: What's been the key to your success?

GW: Success? The WDA's Service Sector Programme recently did a survey for us and found that our customers think "Apollo consistently outperforms other fixed and mobile communication suppliers in key performance areas". So in their eyes maybe we are successful. If so it's because we do what we say and we say what we do. We're in the process of putting that into writing, to go towards an ISO 9000 accreditation.

ITW: Where do you see your company going in the future?

GW: The business world is always striving to improve their efficiency to improve the productivity to improve the margins. And as long as this happens we will continue to do what we do - finding the right supplier offering the right service at the right price.

ITW: What one piece of advice would you give to start up companies in your field?

GW: Don't do it!!! No only joking; you must know your market and learn from your mistakes.
