BaySoft banks on mobile computing

BaySoft Software Development, based in Swansea, specialises in bespoke development of database software, with an emphasis on automating accounting procedures and functions. The company also has a successful track record of developing applications for Palm handheld computing devices.

Managed by Terry Davies, an accountant who crossed over to systems analysis and software design, BaySoft is in its fifth year of trade in its present structure. A key differentiating factor is in the company's understanding of complex accounting rules and systems, which allows the company to develop commercial systems with most necessary accounting functions built-in, negating the need to use additional accounting software.

Past projects have involved developing customised products for the furniture manufacturing, and the vehicle retail industries, to name a few. Davies believes BaySoft's success is due primarily to the calibre of its staff, who he describes as very bright and loyal.

"We are acknowledged as being able to develop software with a very professional look and feel. Our interfaces are designed to a high standard and we really do take a lot of time to ensure that the screens and menus are laid out in the best way possible to ensure the software user has no unfamiliarity issues."

"We are also a small company and we are therefore unrestricted by the red-tape procedures applied by bigger companies. For this reason we have been able to achieve remarkable solutions on comparatively small budgets," Davies says.

BaySoft has recently attracted a national chain of estate agents with a specialist software suite developed for that market. The company is currently looking to concentrate on marketing existing products, possibly focusing on some of its Palm systems, its residential property sales system and its loan processing software. It has also developed a range of phone-billing software systems which it aims to market more aggressively in 2003.

As Davies explains, "We are likely to place more emphasis on supply and supporting existing systems and clients rather than new bespoke development projects in the future. However, if the right type of commission comes our way, we would certainly not be unwilling to undertake the project."

BaySoft also intends to expand its use of Internet based technologies in the future. The company has held back on this aspect to-date, but the availability of ADSL broadband Internet access has transformed the company's operations, and paved the way for future exploitation of this technology.

Most noticeably, says Davies, it's allowed BaySoft to improve its product delivery through faster download provision, and made it easier for staff to conduct vital research.
